My name is Isabelle and have been tutoring ever since my last exam finished in 2004.
I have tutored the following; - students that became DUX of their school. - students with perfect score of 99.95 - students that struggled and improved dramatically from 35% -> 75% in 2 months. - people (that in the past) entered into prestige courses such as medicine. - students that just simply wanted to feel more confident. I believe that tutoring is important .... however as a tutor I have seen various mistakes people make when having a tutor.
Things to consider before finding the right tutor;
1) Tutors are not miracle makers If you think having a tutor will mean you get 99.95 - please find someone else that will offer you such a guarantee. To achieve an excellent score you must work for it. A tutor should be there to clear problems, give additional resources + questions and offer some emotional help. That's it. A lot of students believe that since they got a tutor their problem is solved. Maybe so.... but they still have to WORK!
2) A tutor MUST be reliable. A lot of my clients tell me about their previous tutors. One of the biggest problem is their reliability. Some tutors cancel in the last minute and do not come on time. This includes tutors that charge up to $50/hour! So before choosing someone please be careful with their level of commitment. There are heaps of '99.95' tutors out there that are incredibly smart... but what happens during the semester when work load increases or in May/June when uni exams start?
3) The tutor must have good understanding of topics and have COMMUNICATION skills. Your tutor should be friendly and easy going. You should never be scared of your tutor. The whole purpose of having one is to be able to ask questions, questions and questions. Communication skills are also very important. Sometimes very smart people do not know how to transfer their knowledge to a different person. Tutors should make difficult concepts melt away - not increase confusion... communication of concepts improves through experience.
4) Tutors should have their own notes/materials. The textbook that you have from school is limited. To get a greater advantage the tutor should provide question sheets and notes. This shows that they are prepared for the lesson and know their stuff.
